Many people are introduced to fishing through friends and family. If you would like further information on how to get started, there are a couple of angling associations in Merthyr Tydfil.
Merthyr Angling Association and Taff Bargoed Angling Association can give advice, as well as our local tackle shops 01685 379809.
- River Taff - the fishing season is 3rd March until 30th September. Day and weekly tickets are available.
- Cyfarthfa Park Lake - the fishing season is 16th June until 14th March. The cost of a day ticket is £4.50 Senior, £2.00 Junior
- Parc Taf Bargoed - Angling is available all year round. Annual membership is available along with day tickets. For more information on booking contact the
Taff Bargoed Angling Association - Penywern Top Pond - the fishing season is open all year. The cost of a day ticket is £4.50 Senior, £2.00 Junior
- Penywern Middle Pond - the fishing season is open all year. Only full members of the Merthyr Angling Association can fish on this water
- Ponsticill/Dolygaer Reservoir - Coarse fishing (except Pike) is open all year. Pike fishing season is 16th June until 14th March. Trout fishing is 20th March until 17th October. The cost of a day ticket is £4.50 Senior, £2.00 Junior. A season ticket is also available which covers Dolygaer and Pontsticill reservoirs for £37 Adults and £17 Juniors.
- Upper Neuadd Reservoir - the fishing season is 20th March until 17th October. The cost of a day ticket is £7.50 Senior, £4.00 Junior
- Talybont Reservoir - the fishing season is 20th March until 17th October. To fish on this water you must have a current Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association licence and an Environment Agency rod licence
For coarse or game fishing you will need a rod licence.

Access: Park in lay-by off side of A470. The highest of the series of three reservoirs in the Taff valley is situated some 1400 feet high directly below the central part of the Brecon Beacons just north of the junction of the A470 Brecon to Merthyr Tydfil road and the smaller A4059 leading across the hills to Penderyn.
